Green Lantern #22 - "Green" Lanterns

Larfleeze arrives on Oa to find the Corps at their most desperate, while Hal is forced to throw new Green Lantern recruits into a battle they might not win! And don’t miss the birth of a brand new threat.

Larfleeze Craves Them!

Larfleeze is trashing the Green Lantern Corps, but the timely arrival of Saint Walker and a Star Sapphire helps somewhat. Unfortunately, the new Green Lantern recruits aren't sure what to do! Suddenly, everyone’s rings shut off, leaving every Lantern very confused. Hal’s about to arrest Larfleeze when the rings kick back on, and the Orange Lanterns kill the Star Sapphire. Her ring makes its way down to the sciencells, choosing a criminal named Prixiam Nol-Anj. Her guard believes she loves him, but after she casually kills him, Nol-Anj reveals that it’s her love for her clann (yes, it’s spelled that way) that drew the violet ring to her. Hal gets the idea to launch every captured ship on Oa, convincing Larfleeze that there’s treasure on board. Larfleeze gets confused, making his constructs waver, enabling the Green Lanterns to drive him off. Upon the discovery of the dead sciencell guard, however…Hal realizes that they've got an escaped prisoner. Prixiam is aboard one of the launched ships, and she plots a new course.

Hey, another solid issue! The massive fight against Larfleeze was balanced nicely with the more “quiet” scene with Nol-Anj. That kept up the tension, as even though she is a new character, we knew something was up. Sure, she got picked by a Star Sapphire ring…but why was she in that sciencell in the first place? I'm looking forward to seeing where Nol-Anj’s character goes from here, especially now that’s she’s on the run. I can foresee some cool interactions between her and Hal.

Green Lantern Corps #22 - Meltdown

John Stewart is the only Lantern who knows about a terrible threat coming for the universe…but if he makes it back to Oa, will he choose to serve in an unrecognizable Corps made up of the strangest new recruits ever to wield a ring?

Preview

Fatal Wounds!

The Star Sapphires are running into problems with their rings and the Central Power Battery on Zamaron, so they must seek out the Predator. John Stewart returns to Oa, and helps the new recruits with the rebuilding before speaking with Salaak and Kilowog. He’s surprised to discover that Hal Jordan leads the Green Lantern Corps now, and even more shocked when he hears that Guy Gardner left. Anyway, John and the recruits respond to a distress call, but their rings fail and it’s up the Khunds to save the natives. The Green Lanterns try to fight them off by hand, but they are soon overwhelmed and at the Khunds’ mercy. Meanwhile, Fatality is tracking the Durlan criminals. After killing one, her ring fails as well, leading to her capture. On a faraway world, the Predator plans to feed on a loving couple, but the Entity appears and leads its brethren away. The Entity reveals that the embodiment's of emotion are dying, and they must seek out the White Lantern.

So not only are we continuing the Durlan story from the last issue, but we've also John becoming an unwilling mentor to the new Green Lantern recruits, Salaak digging through the Guardians’ secrets deep beneath Oa, and we find that the emotional entities are going to buy the farm! That’s a lot of content to keep track of in a single issue, but fortunately, it was paced well.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #22 - Relic

Witness the beginnings of the next major Green Lantern villain in this issue! Something terrible has emerged from the Anomaly at the edge of the universe—and it’s going to tear Kyle Rayner apart!

Preview

...Relic Will Break You!

Relic has emerged from the Anomaly, and he discovers to his chagrin that his universe was replaced by a new one. He begins to modify the surrounding vessels into a new ship for himself, but Kyle Rayner tries to stop him. Relic’s surprised that there are lightsmiths (yet another nickname for a Lantern) in this universe who utilize the emotional spectrum, and Kyle is soon captured when he tries to break into the ship. The Templar Guardians remotely activate Carol Ferris’ ring, summoning her to the Anomaly amidst her protests. They need her help to retrieve Kyle, who has been plugged into the Matrix by Relic. There, he learns about the universe, power rings, and Oa via Kyle’s painting skills. With Exeter’s help, Carol is able to break through and help Kyle escape, and Relic is shocked to discover Kyle’s use of the white light, which he believes did not exist. Relic and his ship disappear into a rift, but Kyle explains to the others that their new foe hates the emotional spectrum, and wants to be rid of it. (Relic must be a modern Green Lantern reader. Zing!)

I really liked this issue. No, seriously! Relic’s unique manner of speaking and interacting with the new (to him) universe was cool to watch, and the way he drew information out of Kyle was clever. Sure beats the tired ol’ interrogation and torture cliché. It was also interesting the way that Relic’s technology effortlessly drained Kyle’s ring. He couldn't even keep the default uniform construct going, and a ring really has to be dead in order to do that! Of course, once Kyle escaped his power came right back, but remember that Kyle is unlike other Lanterns in that he can access the spectrum at will, essentially powering his own ring without a battery. (When was the last time we saw him recharge, anyway? I can’t recall.)
