In a future without energy scarcity, an ancient yet advanced Gateway has been discovered in independent space. CMON's SDCC Exclusives: A Betrayal to Loyal Fans and Backers?

In recent years, CMON has built a reputation for creating some of the most beloved board games in the industry. Titles like Zombicide, Dune, Cyberpunk 2077, Cthulhu: Death May Die, Arcadia Quest and Marvel United have garnered a dedicated fanbase, many of whom have supported these games through Kickstarter campaigns and retail purchases. However, CMON's recent decision to make exclusive content for these games available only at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has sparked significant outrage among its loyal supporters.

The Exclusivity Issue

At the heart of the controversy are the exclusive expansions and content for Zombicide: White Death, Cthulhu: Death May Die, and Marvel United. These exclusives include:

  • Zombicide: White Death TMNT Expansion: Featuring comics and Rocksteady and Bebop miniatures for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion. This expansion is only available at SDCC, but was highly requested by backers during the entire campaign.
  • Godzilla Expansion for Cthulhu: Death May Die: A highly anticipated addition that fans have been eagerly waiting for, but it's locked behind the SDCC exclusivity.
  • Marvel UnUniteSymbiotes Cards: Special character cards and content that are not available to backers or through retail channels. L
    • CMON has done this previously with GenCon, and informed only available through Dice Tower support campaigns. This is now false as and expansion, Witching Hour, will be released in a SDCC first release, followed by GenCon before limited online release.

Fan Outrage

The decision to limit these expansions to SDCC attendees has left many fans feeling disrespected and undervalued. Here are some of the key points of contention:

  1. Exclusivity Breeds Resentment: Fans who have supported CMON through Kickstarter campaigns feel betrayed. They invested in these projects with the expectation that they would have access to all content, not just the base game.
  2. Geographical Limitations: Not everyone can attend SDCC. Fans from around the world are being excluded from accessing these exclusive items, creating a sense of unfairness and frustration.
  3. Secondary Market Exploitation: The exclusivity of these items often leads to inflated prices on the secondary market. Fans who can't attend SDCC are forced to pay exorbitant prices to complete their collections.
  4. Broken Promises: Many backers feel that CMON's decision goes against the spirit of Kickstarter, where the community's support is supposed to be rewarded with exclusive content, not sidelined in favor of convention exclusives.

A Call for Change

The backlash from the community is a clear signal to CMON that their current approach is not sustainable. Fans are calling for the company to reconsider their strategy and make these exclusive items available to all backers and through retail channels. This would not only restore trust but also ensure that all fans, regardless of their location or ability to attend conventions, can enjoy the full experience of these beloved games.
